Accessibility

Making this site work for as many brains, eyes and devices as possible.

I'm a neurodivergent human who tries to advocate for accessibility, so it would be a bit rich if my own website got in the way. This page sets out what I've done, what isn't perfect yet and how to tell me if something doesn't work for you.

What I'm aiming for

I aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. That's the widely used standard for accessible websites. I'm not a big organisation with an accessibility team, but I take it seriously and I keep checking.

Make it work your way

Every page has a Display button in the bottom-right corner. It lets you choose:

  • Colours: Electric night (the standard look), Light, High contrast or Soft for less glare
  • Text size: Standard, Large or Larger
  • Text spacing: Standard or Roomy
  • Movement: on or off

Your choices are saved on your own device, not sent anywhere. If your device is already set to ask for more contrast or less movement, the site follows that automatically.

What I've done

  • Text and background colours meet WCAG AA contrast in every colour theme.
  • Everything works with a keyboard, with a visible outline showing where you are.
  • Pages use proper headings, so screen reader users can jump around them.
  • Images have descriptions, and decorative ones are hidden from screen readers.
  • The Video page includes a full written transcript.
  • Nothing plays automatically, and the gently moving background shapes stop if you switch movement off.
  • The main font is Atkinson Hyperlegible, designed to make letters easier to tell apart.
  • I write in plain English and try to keep sentences short.

How I've checked

I've tested the site with automated accessibility tools (axe and Eye-Able) in all four colour themes, on desktop and on phone screen sizes, and checked the Display panel works with a keyboard. Hands-on testing with a screen reader is next on my list.

What isn't perfect yet

The old archive (2014 to 2021)

These pages use an older template. I've fixed the colours, labels and links I could, but a few headings are in the wrong order, and the Soft colour theme doesn't change their light background.

Things other companies make

The video on the Video page plays through LinkedIn, and the contact forms are run by Squarespace, so some of how they behave is out of my hands. The video has a full transcript on the page.

Something not working for you?

If anything on this site is hard to use, or you'd like something in a different format, please tell me through the contact form. I read every message myself and aim to reply as soon as I can. You don't need to explain why you're asking.
